New Key System a Success

Most travelers to the forest have noticed the new Mul-T-Lock high security lock system in place on the gates. This was necessary because the old Medico system had not been changed in 25 years and there were more than 10,000 keys in circulation. Replacement locks for this new system are less costly, compared with the Medico. All building owners have an inventory of keys for their tenants and contractors. The transition occurred without any significant problems. Photo is a typical user key.

General Membership Meeting Held in Corona

On Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at 10 AM our last general membership meeting was held at the Corona Public Library. About 25 people attended, including representatives from the Forest Service. A number of topics were discussed including the new lock system, new vegetation clearance standards, updating the TDEUA By-laws, road improvements, and developing our new website. New directors were elected and officers were selected by the Board as follows: Fred Daniel as President; Tom DeLuca as Vice President; Ken McCrimmon as Secretary/Treasurer; and the remaining Directors are: Mel Swanberg and Bob Gonset.

The Forest Service would like to remind us that should a wild fire be observed, the Dispatch Center at (619) 557-5262 should be called immediately. If you are unable to dial a San Diego number, then call the Corona District office at (951) 736-1811. These numbers should be posted in each facility near the telephone.

Are bird kills actually occuring on your tower? Telecom attorney Fred Hopengarten, Esq. K1VR, has suggested every site owner that operates a video surveillance system could review in fast-forward tapes of the ground below the tower for dead birds. Over a period of time, these observations would prove no birds hit the tower and fell dead at its base. Upon each review, the Chief Engineer could complete & save an Affidavit declaring no bird kills have ever been observed by the camera system. This program could counter anecdotal claims that your tower kills birds. See www.antennazoning.com

Please Close the GatesThe Forest Service would like the Electronic Users to always lock the gates, regardless whether the gate was found open or closed. If the gate is intended to be open by the Forest Service, they will lock the gate in the open position with a lock only the Forest Service has access to. This new policy will insure our continued access to the forest during necessary closures.

Current Access is Limited As of November 2005, the only passable roads to Santiago, Modjeska, Pleasants, and Sierra Peaks are Skyline Drive and Bedford Motorway. Since 1995, the Forest Service road maintenance budget has been reduced by 50% and there are very limited funds for routine work. The Main Divide Truck Trail will be maintained, as it is the "main road" along the ridgeline connecting the sites. .

Forest Service Road Specifications Now Available Official Specifications for Maintenance of Forest Service Roads are now available. As you may be aware, many of our members are now providing limited road maintenance. However, much of this work has not been consistent with FS requirements. Mark Marquette of the Forest Service is prepared to discuss the "fine points" with contractors hired by building owners, site managers, tenants, or users.

Forest Service Meeting Room Being Remodeled The meeting room at the District office in Corona is being remodeled. We expect our next meeting will return to this room. No meeting is scheduled at this time. Advanced notice to all members via email of at least 90 days is anticipated.

Why No Membership Dues Being Charged? Good question. Well it seems we have about $1,425 in the bank after contributing $645 towards the new lock system. In the last several years, the Board decided the Association had enough cash-on-hand and did not need the additional funds membership dues would bring in. Since the primary mission of the Association is to provide an "advisory" role to the Forest Service, the Board will continue this policy for an indefinite time.
